Chapter 12 - The Biometric Trap

Special Agent Miller paused mid-sentence, his eyes darting across the freshly printed memo handed to him by the breathless junior officer. The harsh fluorescent light above cast deep shadows across Miller’s furrowed brow as he slowly lowered the paper to the stainless-steel table. Julian watched him intently, his heart rate remaining steady despite the sudden shift in the room’s atmospheric pressure. The micro-expressions on Miller’s face—a slight widening of the eyes, a tightening of the jaw—signaled that the game had just taken an entirely unanticipated turn.
“It seems your assumption about Rebecca’s biometric signatures was partially correct, Julian,” Miller said, his voice dropping into a flat, clinical register as he slid the memo across the table. “She did sign off on the international clearinghouse transfers. But she didn't use her own biometrics.”
Julian glanced down at the paper. The document detailed a forensic analysis of the Zurich server logs recovered from the raid. The authorization keys used to drain the primary corporate reserves hadn't originated from Rebecca’s terminal at all; they had been executed using a high-resolution silicone fingerprint overlay molded from Julian’s own desk accessories.
“A biometric spoof,” Julian whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked up, his intense expression hardening into absolute focus. “She didn't just help me build the shell companies; she was setting me up for the fall from the very day she was hired in London.”
Miller leaned back, folding his arms across his chest as he studied Julian with a renewed sense of analytical interest.
“That’s not all,” Miller continued, tapping a finger against the edge of the memo. “The federal prosecutor’s office just received a formal deposition from Rebecca’s legal team. She’s claiming you fabricated the entire corporate fraud scheme to oust your father and pin the blame on her when the board caught wind of your illegal restructuring.”
Julian let out a quiet, controlled breath, letting the gravity of the counter-offensive sink in before reacting. He had taught Rebecca everything she knew about corporate warfare, and now she was turning his own strategies against him with terrifying precision.
“She’s building a airtight narrative,” Julian said calmly, his voice dangerously low. “And because the primary server logs in sub-level three were wiped during the Protocol Omega lockdown, there’s no direct digital proof left to contradict her timeline.”
“Except for one thing,” Miller said, leaning forward across the table.
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What thing?”
“Arthur,” Miller replied smoothly. “Your father just agreed to a full confession and witness protection in exchange for immunity. And his testimony places you, your signature, and Rebecca in the legacy vault the night the funds were transferred.”

Before Julian could process the full implications of his father’s final, devastating chess move, the heavy interrogation door swung open again, revealing Arthur standing in the doorway, flanked by two federal marshals, wearing a prison jumpsuit and staring at his son with cold, unforgiving eyes.
