Chapter 10 - Federal Gridlock

The shattered safety glass crunched beneath the heavy boots of the federal agents as they fanned out across the penthouse boardroom in a textbook tactical formation. The red laser sights from their submachine guns painted a chaotic, pulsing grid across the mahogany walls, casting a web of crimson over Arthur, Rebecca, and Julian. The deafening hum of the digital siren had cut out, replaced only by the sharp, authoritative barking of orders from the lead agent standing near the shattered doorway.

“Nobody move! Keep your hands where we can see them!” the lead agent shouted, his tactical vest bearing clear Federal Bureau of Investigation insignia.

Arthur slowly raised his hands, his posture stiff with aristocratic pride even as the agents moved in to secure him against the conference table. His grey suit jacket caught on the edge of the polished wood as he was spun around and cuffed with heavy plastic zip-ties. Rebecca stood frozen beside the open laptop, her eyes darting toward the exit before she sensibly raised her hands, letting her gaze lock onto Julian with a mix of intense fury and reluctant admiration.

Julian didn't flinch. He raised his hands smoothly, offering no resistance as two agents grabbed his arms and forced him down against the table next to his father. The cold metal of the handcuffs bit into his wrists, but his expression remained a mask of detached, calculated calm. He had anticipated the federal intervention weeks ago; the asset freeze was merely the trigger that brought the whole edifice crashing down.

“Julian Vane, Arthur Vane, and Rebecca Vance,” the lead agent read aloud from a digital tablet, stepping into the center of the room. “You are all being detained under federal warrants for securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and obstruction of federal regulatory oversight.”

“There has been a procedural error,” Arthur interjected, his voice carrying the full weight of a patriarch accustomed to commanding courts and boardrooms. “We are the victims of a hostile corporate takeover orchestrated by a rogue employee.”

“That rogue employee is the one who handed us the master decryption keys three hours ago, Mr. Vane,” the lead agent replied coldly, gesturing toward Julian with a slight nod of his helmeted head. “Your son cooperated with the federal prosecutor’s office under a deferred prosecution agreement. He’s turning state’s evidence.”

Arthur’s head snapped toward Julian, his eyes widening in profound shock and betrayal. The older man’s face turned an ash-grey color, the reality of the ultimate betrayal finally sinking in.

“You sold out your own blood,” Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and grief.

Julian looked back at his father, his expression completely devoid of remorse.

“I didn't sell out our blood, Father,” Julian whispered back as the agents began pulling them toward the shattered doors. “I simply terminated a toxic partnership.”

As the agents dragged them out toward the private elevators, Rebecca pulled back slightly, turning her head to throw one final, chilling statement over her shoulder.

“You think you won immunity, Julian,” Rebecca said, her voice cutting through the noise of the tactical gear. “But when the grand jury looks at the offshore trails, they’ll see your name at the very top of the ledger.”
