Chapter 13 - The Patriarch’s Testimony

The heavy metal door of the interrogation room clicked shut behind Arthur Vane with a definitive, chilling echo. The older man stood upright, his grey hair neatly brushed despite the coarse fabric of the federal prison jumpsuit, radiating the same unyielding aristocratic authority that had governed the Vane Corporation for decades. He did not look at Julian immediately. Instead, he walked slowly toward the empty plastic chair opposite Special Agent Miller, pulled it back with a steady hand, and sat down with deliberate, agonizing slowness.
“You always underestimated the value of old alliances, Julian,” Arthur said, his voice gravelly and devoid of any paternal warmth as he finally turned his gaze toward his son. “You thought by locking me out of the penthouse, you had seized control of the legacy. But you forgot that a true patriarch owns the foundation upon which the entire building rests.”
Julian kept his hands cuffed to the stainless-steel table, his posture remaining rigidly upright. He met his father’s steady gaze without blinking, deploying every ounce of his restrained emotional discipline to mask the cold fury boiling beneath his calm exterior.
“You traded your freedom and your legacy just to ensure I wouldn't walk away with the empire, Father?” Julian asked quietly, his voice slicing through the tense air of the room. “You’re in your seventies. Witness protection and a federal conspiracy conviction mean you’ll spend the rest of your life living in a shadow.”
“I’m spending what’s left of my life ensuring that the Vane name isn't completely destroyed by an ungrateful, impatient heir,” Arthur retorted sharply, leaning forward over the table. “Rebecca has already agreed to hand over the encrypted drives and testify that you orchestrated the entire embezzlement scheme from the very beginning. My testimony simply confirms the timeline.”
Special Agent Miller watched the exchange quietly, sliding a fresh digital recorder across the table to capture the official deposition.
“Mr. Vane, let’s get back on the record,” Miller instructed, clicking the device to active. “State your full name and your relationship to the defendant.”
“Arthur Vane, former chairman of Vane Corporation and father to the defendant, Julian Vane,” Arthur recited smoothly, his voice unwavering. “On the night of the corporate gala, my son Julian presented me with falsified financial audits designed to force an emergency restructuring of our primary assets into unauthorized offshore accounts.”
Julian listened to the fabrication with a detached, analytical calm, recognizing the precise legal trap his father and Rebecca had constructed together. They had formed an unholy alliance to sacrifice him, ensuring that both of their names were scrubbed from the primary indictments in exchange for shifting total culpability onto the deposed CEO.
“And where does Rebecca Vance fit into your narrative, Mr. Vane?” Miller asked, pressing the interrogation forward.
Arthur paused for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of hesitation crossing his lined face before he delivered the final, fatal blow to his son’s defense.
“Rebecca was simply an employee trying to whistleblow on Julian’s illegal activities,” Arthur stated clearly. “She was framed to silence her.”

Julian felt the walls closing in definitively, yet his mind raced toward a final, desperate counter-strategy as the recording light blinked red on the table.
