Chapter 5 - Sub-Level Three

The elevator car descended with an unnatural smoothness, the digital floor numbers bleeding past the lobby and continuing down into the subterranean infrastructure of the Vane Corporation tower. Julian stood alone in the mirrored compartment, straightening his cuffs and letting out a long, measured breath that finally allowed the tension in his shoulders to dissipate. He hadn't planned for Arthur to return tonight, but he had contingency plans buried deep within the company’s legacy architecture—systems that even his father’s master key couldn't unlock without a secondary biometric authentication.
When the elevator doors parted with a soft hiss, Julian stepped out into the damp, industrial chill of sub-level three. This was the original foundation of the old Vane Steelworks, preserved beneath the modern skyscraper like a fossilized skeleton of an older, harsher era. The lighting was harsh, flickering fluorescent tubes casting long, jagged shadows across exposed concrete pillars and rusted iron pipes. Julian walked with purpose down the central corridor, his patent leather shoes clicking sharply against the damp floor until he reached a reinforced steel door marked with a faded hazard symbol.
He pressed his thumb against the small biometric scanner embedded in the wall beside the door. A red light flashed twice before turning solid green with a heavy pneumatic click. The massive door swung inward, revealing a hidden control room filled with banks of analog magnetic tape drives and secondary servers that hummed with a low, vibrating frequency. This was the dark archive—a repository of every dirty secret, hostile takeover, and suppressed patent the Vane family had accumulated over the past four decades.
Julian walked over to the central console and punched a rapid sequence into the physical keyboard. A amber monitor flickered to life, scrolling through lines of raw data before displaying a live video feed from the boardroom upstairs. On the screen, he watched Arthur and Rebecca standing over his desk, examining the physical files he had deliberately left behind as bait. A slow, calculated smile spread across Julian’s face. They thought they had seized control of the engine, but they didn't realize they had just stepped into the combustion chamber.
He reached down and pulled a heavy master toggle switch on the side of the console, disabling the building’s primary ventilation and locking every exterior exit door from the basement up to the penthouse.
“Let’s see how long your empire stands when the oxygen runs thin,” Julian murmured to the empty room.

Suddenly, a loud klaxon blared overhead, bathing the underground bunker in a pulsing, hypnotic crimson light as a heavy steel bulkhead slammed shut behind him, trapping him inside.
