Chapter 1 - The Glass Breaks

The crystalline chandelier above cast fractured prisms of light across the suffocating luxury of the ballroom. Julian stood motionless, the stem of his champagne flute pressed lightly against his thumb. He felt the weight of a thousand eyes, yet his focus remained entirely on Rebecca. She stood unyielding in her black slip dress, the fabric catching the amber glow of the room. The air between them hummed with a dangerous, unspoken history. Julian forced his breathing to remain slow and measured, keeping his exterior impeccably calm despite the roaring chaos inside his mind.
“Please escort her out,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a smooth, authoritative register that barely cut through the ambient jazz. “She isn’t on tonight’s guest list.”
Rebecca did not blink. She stood her ground, her gaze locking onto his with a steady, intense sharpness that defied the security guards already beginning to converge behind her.
“That’s fine,” Rebecca replied, her tone cool and unbothered.
“You’re only doing your job.”
Julian offered a thin, calculated smile, maintaining his polite yet utterly immovable corporate demeanor as he tilted his glass slightly.
“Rebecca, you really should have chosen another night.”
The tension spiked instantly. Out of the corner of his eye, Julian tracked the heavy double doors swinging open. An older man in a tailored grey suit strode past the perimeter, flanked by two imposing security guards. Julian’s carefully constructed composure vanished. The champagne flute tilted, liquid sloshing over the rim as his expression shifted into profound shock and icy tension.
“Step back,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly before he found his footing again, projecting a command that stunned the nearby crowd.
“She is my successor.”
Rebecca looked intensely at Julian, the corners of her mouth twitching into a quiet, knowing expression. She slowly raised her hand and deliberately adjusted her dress strap, letting the heavy silence stretch to a breaking point as high tension saturated the room.
“Now you understand why I came back,” Rebecca murmured.
May you like
Suddenly, the older man in the grey suit stopped walking, turned his head directly toward Julian, and pulled a heavy gold key from his pocket.
