Chapter 3: Poison in the Silverware**

By evening, the mansion buzzed with the quiet hum of high society. Chamber music drifted through the high-arched halls as venture capitalists and board members in black tie mingled over vintage champagne.

Alana played the part of the radiant hostess flawlessly. She smiled, laughed softly, and deflected questions about Julian's delayed appearance. But behind her manicured smile lay frantic calculation.

In the pantry, she cornered Walter, the head of Thorne Enterprises' legal team and her longtime confidant. "He intends to officially adopt her, Walter. A toddler will become next in line to the family trust. That cuts my entitlement in half if Julian files for separation."

Walter sipped his scotch, his expression guarded. "Julian's father wrote a strict morals clause into the trust agreement, Alana. If Julian demonstrates erratic behavior or causes a scandal that threatens the stock price, the board can invoke emergency conservatorship. You would be appointed interim administrator."

"And what constitutes erratic behavior?" Alana whispered, her eyes gleaming with dark intent.

"Uncontrolled negligence. Endangering a minor within the household."

Alana looked toward the marble staircase. "Then we give the board exactly what they need to see."

Upstairs in the nursery, Lily sat on a plush rug, coloring a picture of a house with a yellow sun. The door creaked open, and Alana stepped in, her shadow stretching across the bright drawing.

"Lily," Alana purred, holding out a small, glass figurine of a swan. "Would you like to show your uncle's friends your new toy?"
