Chapter 10: Dismantling the Tower**
A week later, Julian convened an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors at Thorne Enterprises headquarters.
The boardroom was tense. Rumors of fraud and family betrayal had caused the stock to fluctuate wildly, and the senior partners were clamoring for aggressive damage control.
"Julian," senior partner Arthur Sterling spoke up. "We must issue a press release disassociating the company from the late Claire Thorne's situation. We must show strength and stability."
Julian stood up at the head of the table. He laid his keycard and the chairman's signet ring onto the polished mahogany surface.
"I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer," Julian announced calmly.
Gasps filled the room.
"The Thorne foundation will be restructured," Julian continued. "Eighty percent of the family trust is being liquidated and transferred directly to pediatric hospices, foster care reform networks, and shelters across the country in Claire Thorne's name. Thorne Enterprises will transition into an employee-owned cooperative."
"You are throwing away an empire!" Sterling protested, standing up.
"I am curing a disease," Julian replied evenly. "Our father taught us to value marble and balance sheets over human life. It killed my sister. It will not raise my daughter."
