Chapter 1: The Weight of Marble**

The marble foyer smelled of expensive lilies and impending ruin.
Julian Thorne adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke tuxedo, his shoes clicking heavily against the white stone floor. Below him, Alana stood rigid, her pristine white gown catching the morning sunlight like a polished blade. Between them, kneeling on the cold floor, was three-year-old Lily. Her dusty pink dress was crumpled, and her small fingers clutched a tiny white crossbody bag as if it were the only anchor holding her to the earth.
"Get her out, Julian," Alana hissed, her aristocratic veneer cracking beneath unbridled contempt. "We are hosting the board members of Thorne Enterprises tonight. I will not have an orphan beggar running around our estate."
Julian ignored his wife. He knelt before Lily, leveling his gaze with hers. The girl had eyes he knew better than his own reflection—warm hazel rimmed with gold, the exact hue of his late sister Claire's eyes. Claire had vanished five years ago following a bitter family feud, cutting off all ties. Three days ago, a hospice nurse had delivered Lily to their gates with Claire’s death certificate and a handwritten letter Julian hadn't yet found the courage to read aloud.
"Lily," Julian said softly, his voice rough. "Are you hurt?"
The toddler shook her head, though a fat tear rolled down her cheek. "Auntie said bad people sleep outside."
Julian stood up slowly. When he turned to Alana, the warmth in his eyes was gone, replaced by an icy resolve. "This child is my blood. She goes nowhere."
Alana scoffed, crossing her arms. "She is a scandal waiting to explode. The press thinks Claire was a disgrace. If you claim this child, the board will question your stability."

"Let them question," Julian said coldly. "Go upstairs, Alana. Now."
