Chapter 2: The Letter in the White Bag**

Julian carried Lily into his private study, locking the heavy mahogany door behind them. The room was lined with centuries of family wealth—first-edition books, fine art, and brass instruments of an empire built on ruthless ambition. Yet, the tiny girl sitting on his leather sofa made all of it seem utterly hollow.

"Lily," Julian murmured, sitting beside her. "May I see what is inside your bag?"

Lily hesitated, then nodded solemnly. She opened the tiny white purse and pulled out a single, worn envelope sealed with blue wax.

Julian’s hands trembled as he broke the seal. The familiar handwriting of his sister blurred under the sting of unshed tears.

> *Julian,* >*If you are reading this, I am gone. I know we parted in anger over our father’s will, over the greed that poisoned our bloodline. But Lily knows nothing of wealth or pride. She only knows love. She has your kindness, brother—the kindness you buried under tailored suits and corporate titles. Protect her. Not from the world, but from the people inside your own home. She holds the true legacy of our father’s heart.* >*— Claire.*

A folded document fell from the envelope into Julian's lap. It was not a plea for money. It was an unrecorded deed to the original Thorne estate in Vermont, alongside a trust account funded entirely by Claire’s modest life insurance, naming Julian as sole custodian for Lily. Claire had asked for nothing from the billion-dollar empire. She only wanted her daughter safe.
