Chapter 7 - The Ghost from the Past

The mahogany-paneled boardroom of Vance Holdings was usually a sanctuary of absolute control, but today the air felt suffocating. Elena paced the length of the long conference table, her emerald green dress replaced by a sharp charcoal business suit, though her signature long dark hair remained loose over her shoulders. At the head of the table sat Catherine, her hands folded neatly over a dossier bearing a single, handwritten name: Julian Thorne. The name alone had caused the senior partners to resign before the sun had even reached its zenith.
"Julian Thorne hasn't set foot in this country in twenty years," Elena said, stopping her pacing to lean against the back of an empty leather chair. "He was written out of the city's founding charter after the municipal embezzlement scandal of ninety-eight. He's a ghost."
"Ghosts have long memories, Elena, and even longer bank accounts," Catherine replied softly, her voice uncharacteristically strained. She looked up at her daughter, the years suddenly weighing heavily upon her shoulders. "Julian isn't just an investor. He was my business partner before he was my husband's executioner."
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open without a knock. A tall man in a bespoke midnight-blue suit stepped into the room, his silver-streaked hair brushed back neatly from a face carved from granite. He moved with effortless, predatory grace, pausing just inside the threshold to survey the room with piercing amber eyes that mirrored Elena's own intense gaze.
"It's been a long time, Catherine," Julian Thorne said, his voice deep and resonant, echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "I see you raised a daughter who inherited your stubborn refusal to know when you've lost."
Elena straightened up immediately, stepping into the space between her mother and the unexpected intruder. "You have thirty seconds to explain why your shell company froze our assets before I have security throw you out the window."
Julian chuckled, a low, humorless sound that sent a chill down the spine of anyone listening. He walked slowly toward the head of the table, resting his palms on the polished wood surface directly across from Catherine.
"Security?" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow. "My dear, the security guards downstairs were escorted off the premises twenty minutes ago by federal marshals acting on my direct orders. This building, this company, and everything inside it now belong to the Thorne Trust."
Catherine finally spoke, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "You promised you would never return to this city, Julian. You swore an oath when we divided the portfolio."

"People change their minds when unfinished business is involved," Julian replied, his amber eyes shifting slowly from Catherine to fix squarely on Elena. "And I'd say breaking your daughter's pride in a ballroom last night was just the warm-up."
