Chapter 1 - The Fall on Marble

The crystal chandelier overhead cast a harsh, unforgiving light across the polished white marble of the grand ballroom. Elena Vance adjusted the thin straps of her emerald green slip dress, feeling the cool stone beneath her bare palms. Her long dark hair cascaded over one shoulder as she pushed herself up from the floor. The reverberations of the shove still echoed in her chest, but her gaze remained locked onto Veronica Sterling, whose glittering gold sequin halter gown caught the overhead beams like armor. Veronica stood with her hands planted firmly on her hips, her blonde hair pulled into a tight, aggressive chignon that accentuated the cruel sneer curving her painted lips.
"Know your place," Veronica hissed, her voice dripping with venom as nearby socialites averted their eyes, too terrified of the Sterling family's social and financial dominance to intervene.
Elena did not flinch. She did not scream, nor did she let a single tear escape her dark eyes. Instead, she inhaled slowly, her chest rising and falling beneath the rich green silk with controlled, defiant grace. She reached down, her slender fingers wrapping securely around her sleek black smartphone, which had clattered only inches away during the sudden assault.
"You think wealth gives you immunity, Veronica," Elena said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, calm resonance that cut through the muffled string quartet playing in the adjacent salon.
Veronica took a sharp step forward, her confidence suddenly faltering under the heavy weight of Elena's unwavering stare. "You are nothing in this room, Elena. You're an uninvited ghost at a feast you could never afford."
Elena ignored the insult completely. She raised the device to her ear, her movements deliberate and unhurried, maintaining intense eye contact with her tormentor.
"Mom, come get me," Elena said into the phone, the words hanging heavily in the chilled air.

Before Veronica could formulate a sarcastic retort, the massive mahogany and iron doors at the far end of the ballroom groaned on their hinges and slowly began to swing open.
