Chapter 2 - The Sound of Closing Doors

Panic rippled across Veronica Sterling's carefully sculpted features, shattering her arrogant facade in a fraction of a second. She clutched both hands to her cheeks, her golden sequin dress shimmering under the panic-stricken tremor of her body. The heavy wooden doors continued their wide, dramatic sweep, revealing a chilly midnight breeze that rushed into the stifling, perfume-heavy room. Gasps echoed among the cluster of wealthy onlookers as heavy footsteps resounded against the stone entryway. Elena stood tall in her emerald green slip dress, her posture rigid, her expression a mask of cold, unbreakable resolve.

"Get out of my house!" Veronica shrieked, her voice cracking with sudden, uncontrolled hysteria as she pointed a trembling finger toward the grand entrance.

No one moved. The guests froze in place, sensing a profound tectonic shift in the room's power dynamic. Striding through the open doorway was Catherine Vance, a fifty-year-old titan of industry dressed impeccably in a tailored navy blue pantsuit. Her blonde hair was cropped short, framing a face hardened by decades of corporate warfare and unyielding authority. Flanking her on either side were two imposing security guards in dark suits, their expressions stone-cold and professional. Deep emotional tension filled the cavernous hall, thick enough to choke the breath from every socialite present.

Catherine did not look at Veronica. Her sharp, piercing blue eyes scanned the room until they locked onto her daughter. Seeing the faint dust on Elena’s green dress, a dangerous flash of maternal fury ignited in Catherine's eyes, quickly masked by executive coldness. She reached into her leather portfolio, drawing out a thick stack of heavy, cream-colored legal documents bound with a crimson ribbon.

"It's not your house anymore, Veronica," Catherine said firmly, her voice carrying an absolute authority that commanded absolute silence.

Veronica staggered backward, her high heels clicking frantically against the marble. "That's impossible. Richard told me the merger went through. We own this estate."

Catherine stepped forward, closing the distance between them with slow, predatory strides. She extended the legal papers toward Veronica's chest, forcing the younger woman to look down at the bold black lettering stamped across the top page.

"Your husband traded your foundation for a failing venture," Catherine stated, her tone flat and merciless. "Our corporation bought your husband's business outright twenty minutes ago. Eviction notice, forty-eight hours."
