Chapter 12 - The Upload Protocol

The red emergency lighting painted the boardroom in a harsh, dramatic glow as Victoria Thorne aimed the electronic override device directly at Elena. The humming of the servers in the basement sounded like a distant, angry swarm of bees. Catherine Vance stepped in front of her daughter, her posture rigid, ready to take the blow. Julian Thorne remained frozen near the window, his amber eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and sheer terror as he realized the decades of carefully constructed lies were about to crumble into dust.
"Don't do it, Victoria," Julian warned, his voice dangerously low. "If you fry that phone, the dead-man switch triggers the secondary mirror sites. The data goes out regardless."
Victoria’s hand trembled, the small device blinking with a rapid amber light. "We spent twenty-five years building this empire, Julian! We cannot let some arrogant girl in a green dress dismantle our entire legacy because of a sentimental grudge!"
"It's not a grudge, Victoria. It's justice," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute. She stepped out from behind her mother, holding her smartphone up so the bright screen was clearly visible to everyone in the room. "The people you ruined, the families you displaced like the Sterlings, the executives you blackmailed—they all deserve to know the truth."
The progress bar on Elena's phone screen ticked from ninety-eight percent to ninety-nine percent. The tactical operatives shifted uneasily, looking to Julian for orders, but Julian stood motionless, defeated by his own past.
"Ninety-nine," Elena whispered, watching the final digits crawl across the OLED display.
With a soft, melodic chime, the screen flashed a brilliant green checkmark: Upload Complete. Distribution Successful.
Victoria screamed in frustration, pressing the override button repeatedly, but the device only sparked and died in her hand, emitting a faint puff of grey smoke. The silence that followed was deafening. The building's main power abruptly surged back online, flooding the boardroom with harsh white fluorescent light that made everyone squint.
Before anyone could move, the sharp, wailing sirens of federal law enforcement vehicles echoed up from the street below, growing louder by the second as dozens of unmarked cruisers converged on the entrance of Vance Holdings.

Julian slowly lowered his head, running a hand through his silver-streaked hair. "It's over," he murmured softly. "The ghosts finally caught up with us."
