Chapter 10 - The Hidden Ledger

The air in the boardroom grew dense, charged with a sudden, suffocating tension. Julian Thorne's aristocratic composure faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of genuine shock flashing across his face before he quickly masked it behind his usual granite exterior. Catherine Vance stepped back, her hand flying to her mouth as the full implication of Elena's words settled over the room. The ninety-eight ledger—a mythical document rumored to contain the names of every corrupt politician, judge, and industrialist who had built the modern city on bribery and backroom deals—had supposedly been destroyed in a warehouse fire twenty-two years ago.

"You're playing a very dangerous game, young lady," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, menacing growl as he leaned down slightly to meet Elena's unblinking gaze. "Mentioning a document that doesn't exist is a good way to find yourself sharing a prison cell with the Sterlings."

Elena did not flinch. She maintained direct eye contact, her long dark hair falling straight against her tailored suit jacket. "If it didn't exist, Julian, you wouldn't have frozen our accounts within twelve hours of my shoving match with Veronica Sterling. You didn't come to ruin us; you came to search the estate before we found where my father hid it."

Catherine looked between Julian and her daughter, her face pale. "Elena, what are you talking about? Your father told me he burned that book the night Julian left."

"My father was a coward who documented every bribe he ever paid to protect himself," Elena replied without breaking her stare with Julian. "And before he died, he left the decryption key for the digital archive right where nobody would ever look—inside the security system of the main estate."

Julian's jaw tightened. The veneer of untouchable corporate titan was completely gone now, replaced by the desperate urgency of a man whose entire life's work hung by a thread. He reached out, his hand gripping Elena's arm with bruising force.

"Where is it?" Julian demanded, his voice losing its polished composure entirely.

Before Elena could answer, the overhead lights in the boardroom flickered violently and then died, plunging the entire floor into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Emergency red backup strips ignited along the baseboards, casting long, crimson shadows across the walls. From the hallway outside, the unmistakable sound of heavy boot heels approaching the double doors echoed through the silence.

Catherine shouted over the sudden mechanical whir of the ventilation system shutting down. "Someone is overriding the building's main breaker!"

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom burst open, crashing against the interior walls as several figures in tactical gear flooded into the crimson-lit room.
