Chapter 3 - Papers in the Foyer

The shockwave of Catherine Vance's declaration left the grand ballroom utterly silent, save for the distant hum of the estate's central air conditioning. Veronica's manicured fingers hovered over the heavy legal documents, refusing to touch the cream-colored pages as if accepting them would render the nightmare absolute reality. The navy blue pantsuit of Catherine Vance seemed to absorb all the light in the room, casting a long, imposing shadow over the sparkling gold sequins of Veronica's gown. Elena stood a few paces behind her mother, her long dark hair falling straight against the emerald silk, her eyes observing the crumbling pride of her adversary with quiet, detached vindication.

"You can't do this," Veronica whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint rustle of the parchment in Catherine's steady hands. "My husband... Richard said the bailout was secured. He told me the Vances were out of liquidity."

"Richard lied to save his own skin, or perhaps he was simply too arrogant to read the fine print of our acquisition terms," Catherine replied, her voice unwavering. She pressed the papers harder against Veronica's chest until the younger woman was forced to grip the edges to avoid dropping them on the floor. "Your forty-eight-hour clock started the moment the electronic signature cleared at midnight. Every painting, every chandelier, every square inch of this marble floor now belongs to Vance Holdings."

A collective murmur erupted from the crowd of onlookers. Whispers of disbelief and panic bounced off the high ceilings as the high-society guests realized the Sterling dynasty had just collapsed in a single evening. Veronica spun around, desperately searching the crowd for her husband, but Richard Sterling was nowhere to be found, having quietly slipped out the back service exit the moment the gates were breached. The realization hit Veronica like a physical blow, draining the remaining color from her face.

"Richard!" she screamed aloud, her voice echoing emptily against the vaulted ceilings.

Catherine turned slightly, addressing the two security guards standing at attention by the open doors. "Escort the remaining guests to the perimeter. This property is now a restricted corporate asset."

The guards stepped forward into the ballroom, their synchronized footsteps snapping the spell of shock holding the crowd in place. Guests began scrambling toward the coat check and side exits, eager to distance themselves from the disgraced Sterlings. Veronica stood completely alone in the center of the vast floor, clutching the eviction notice as the foundation of her entire life dissolved beneath her feet.

Elena watched her for a final moment, stepping closer to her mother's protective side. "Enjoy packing," Elena whispered softly.
