Chapter 9

Julian paced the length of the stone patio, his hand rubbing the back of his neck as he tried to process the dual layers of deception that surrounded him. On one side stood Clara, flawed, terrified, and manipulated into desperate criminal compliance; on the other stood Helena, cold, calculating, and using discipline as a cover for a much darker agenda. “If Marcus had those files, where are they now?” Julian asked abruptly, stopping his pacing to fix his gaze on his daughter. Clara wiped her nose with the back of her sleeve, wincing as the motion pulled at the bandages on her forearm. “In the study. In the wall safe behind the old oil painting of the founder,” she murmured, looking down at her lap in shame. “Helena found out about them two weeks ago. She didn't destroy them, Daddy. She copied them. She's been using them to control Marcus, and... and to control me.” Julian felt a cold sweat break out across his back despite the warm morning air. The offshore accounts weren't just old corporate history; they were a legacy of shortcuts he had taken a decade ago to save the firm from bankruptcy—shortcuts that, if exposed today, would strip him of his fortune, his freedom, and his reputation. Helena hadn't just been protecting the family; she had been quietly acquiring the leverage needed to execute a hostile takeover of his entire life. Julian realized that the trash bags Clara had been dragging across the lawn weren't filled with ordinary refuse; they contained shredded documents from the study—the physical evidence Helena was erasing after extracting what she needed. “She’s planning to leave, isn't she?” Julian asked quietly, the realization dawning with absolute clarity. Clara nodded slowly, her lower lip trembling. “Tomorrow. After the transfer goes through. She said if I didn't finish cleaning up the shredder remains, she would let Marcus finish what he started with me.”
