Chapter 6

The polaroid snapshot trembled slightly in Julian's grip. The image was slightly out of focus, captured in what appeared to be the dimly lit back alley of a downtown bar, but the subjects were unmistakable. Clara, younger and wearing a leather jacket he had never seen before, was handing a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills to a burly, dangerous-looking man with extensive neck tattoos. Next to them, a high-end luxury watch—one that Julian had reported stolen from his own private safe six months ago—was clearly visible in the man's palm. Julian stared at the evidence, his mind struggling to bridge the gap between the fragile, bandage-wrapped girl sitting outside on the lawn and the calculating figure in the photograph. “Where... where did you get this?” Julian whispered, his voice losing its thunderous edge, replaced by a hollow shock. Helena stepped closer, the scent of her perfume suddenly feeling suffocating in the enclosed space. “A private investigator, Julian. Do you really think I spend all my time shopping and hosting charity luncheons? While you're flying across the country chasing mergers, I'm the one cleaning up the messes your daughter leaves in her wake,” Helena said, her tone dripping with self-righteous martyrdom. Julian looked up from the photo, his eyes searching Helena's face for any sign of forgery, but her expression was rock-solid, backed by the cold, undeniable detail of the stolen watch. “She... she stole from the safe?” Julian asked, the realization tasting like ash in his mouth. Helena nodded slowly. “She was funding a crowd of dangerous people, running up debts that could have ruined our standing in the community, not to mention our safety. When I found out, I tried talking to her. She refused to stop. So, I took control. The bandages and the labor were just reminders of what happens when you betray this household,” Helena explained, making the abuse sound like a logical, necessary administrative protocol. Julian stared at the photo, the moral high ground he had claimed moments ago crumbling beneath his feet, leaving him trapped in a complex web of familial betrayal.
