Chapter 12

The study door flew open with a violent crash, slamming hard against the wood-paneled wall. Helena stood in the doorway, her red satin dress catching the dim light of the room, but the polished, unbothered composure she had worn all morning was entirely gone. Her face was contorted into an ugly, furious snarl, her eyes wide with a frantic, animalistic panic that stripped away years of calculated elegance. “What did you do?” Helena hissed, taking a sharp step into the room, her voice losing its melodic cadence and dropping into a harsh, grating screech. Julian remained seated at the desk, his fingers resting casually on the terminal keyboard as he looked up at his wife with cold, impassive eyes. “I cut the cord, Helena. The upload is terminated. The files are locked,” Julian said evenly, matching her hysteria with absolute, terrifying calm. Helena lunged forward, slamming both palms down onto the mahogany desk, leaning over until her face was inches from his. “You fool! You absolute idiot! You have no idea what you’ve just done! Those files were our ticket out before the faxes drop! Without them, we are both going down for wire fraud and tax evasion!” she screamed, abandoning all pretense of innocence or plausible deniability. Julian didn't flinch; he simply leaned back in his leather chair, watching her unravel with clinical detachment. “No, Helena. You are going down. I’ve already transferred the server logs and the audio recordings of your threats against Clara to my legal team downtown. They’ll be here with a federal warrant within the hour,” Julian replied smoothly. Helena froze, the color draining from her face as the reality of her checkmate crashed down upon her. The silence in the study became heavy and absolute, broken only by the steady, mechanical hum of the computer cooling fans as the trap finally snapped shut around the master manipulator.
