Chapter 1

The morning sun beat down mercilessly on the manicured emerald lawn of the sprawling estate, casting sharp, unforgiving shadows across the trimmed hedges. Clara stood near the ornamental fountain, her breathing shallow and ragged. Her blonde hair, usually meticulously styled, was pulled into a loose, messy updo with stray strands clinging to her damp forehead. The silk of her pink slip dress clung to her skin, stained with dirt and morning dew. More striking, however, were the stark white bandages wrapped tightly around her forearms and knees, hiding the ugly purple and yellow bruises blooming beneath. With trembling fingers, she gripped the thick plastic handles of two massive black trash bags, dragging them laboriously across the pristine grass. Every movement sent sharp, agonizing pain shooting through her joints, yet she forced herself to keep moving. The contents of the bags were heavy, shifting with a dull, sickening thud against the turf, but stopping meant facing a punishment far worse than physical exhaustion.
A sharp crunch of gravel announced the arrival of a sleek, dark luxury sedan gliding up the private circular drive. The engine cut out with a soft purr, and the driver's side door swung open. Julian stepped out, his tall frame clad in a sharply tailored light grey suit jacket and a dark blue dress shirt. He froze, his gaze locking onto Clara on the lawn. His expression shifted instantly from professional calm to absolute, petrified shock. Dropping his leather briefcase onto the warm pavement, he sprinted across the grass, his shoes sinking slightly into the earth. He dropped to his knees right beside her in the dirt, ignoring the ruin of his trousers, and gently reached out to examine her bruised, bandaged arms. Clara blinked slowly, fighting back a wave of dizziness, and looked down into his familiar, terrified eyes. A small pause hung heavily in the air between them before she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the distant highway, “Daddy? You're home?” Julian's chest heaved as he fought to control his rising panic, the foundations of his seemingly perfect family life shattering into a million jagged pieces right before his eyes on the sunlit lawn.
