Chapter 4

The heavy oak doors swung wider as Julian stepped across the threshold, leaving Clara resting safely against the patio cushions outside. The cavernous foyer of the mansion was cool and silent, dominated by a towering crystal chandelier that cast fractured prisms of light across the white marble floor. Helena stood near the base of the grand staircase, her arms folded gracefully across the vibrant red satin of her dress. She removed her sunglasses, revealing sharp, calculating eyes that showed no remorse, only an icy annoyance at being interrupted. Julian stopped ten feet away, his chest rising and falling heavily beneath the grey suit jacket. “Explain yourself, Helena. Right now,” Julian demanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. Helena sighed softly, tilting her head with feigned exhaustion, as if dealing with a mildly troublesome employee rather than her husband. “She was acting out, Julian. A spoiled girl needs boundaries, and you were too soft on her. You're always away on business, leaving me to manage the wreckage of your permissive parenting,” Helena retorted, her tone cutting and utterly devoid of maternal warmth. Julian took a sharp step forward, the sheer force of his presence causing Helena to tense slightly, though she refused to break eye contact. “Boundaries? Those are injuries, Helena. She has broken skin, bruises, and you forced her to haul trash in the blistering heat while threatening her basic survival. That isn't parenting; that's abuse and captivity,” Julian snarled, pointing back toward the open door where Clara sat trembling. Helena let out a dry, humorless laugh that grated against the acoustic perfection of the hall. “You think you know everything because you write the checks, Julian. But you don't know what she’s been hiding in this house. You don't know what she did before you arrived,” Helena whispered darkly, stepping closer with a predatory grace that hinted at secrets far more dangerous than simple domestic cruelty.
