Chapter 3

Before Julian could rise to his feet to storm the mahogany double doors, the heavy oak panels clicked open from within. A cool wave of air-conditioned air spilled out onto the sun-drenched porch, carrying the faint, expensive scent of vintage Chanel No. 5. Descending the grand indoor staircase with agonizing slowness was Helena. She wore a striking, floor-length red satin dress that caught the morning light like spilled wine, her dark sunglasses hiding her eyes from the harsh exterior glare, though the smirk playing at the corners of her crimson lips was unmistakable. She paused on the middle landing, resting one manicured hand casually against the wrought-iron banister, looking down at the dramatic scene unfolding on the lawn below them. Helena tilted her head with an air of profound, theatrical boredom, entirely unbothered by the ruined landscape or Julian's murderous expression. “I could have sworn you were in Florida today,” Helena said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness and casual condescension. Julian stood up slowly, stepping protectively in front of Clara as if shielding her from a physical blow. The stark contrast between Helena's pristine elegance and Clara's battered, dirt-stained state was a damning indictment in itself. Julian took a measured step toward the entrance, his jaw clenched so tightly that muscles jumped along his jawline. “You were supposed to be three states away, Helena,” Julian said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all marital warmth. Helena simply shrugged, adjusting her dark glasses as she took another step down the plush carpet of the stairs. “Flight delays, darling. Plans change. Just like people change,” she replied smoothly, her nonchalance serving as a match to the powder keg of Julian's barely contained fury, setting the stage for a confrontation that had been brewing beneath the pristine surface of their wealthy existence for years.
