Chapter 9 - The Breach

The footsteps stopped directly outside the heavy oak door of the library. A sharp, metallic click echoed through the room as someone tested the brass handle, only to find it locked from the inside.
Marcus motioned silently toward the shadows near the corner bookcase, gesturing for Vivienne to step back while he positioned himself beside the doorframe, his service pistol raised and leveled at head height. Vivienne unholstered her own sidearm with smooth, practiced efficiency, her breathing steady and controlled, completely shedding any trace of hesitation.
"Open the door," a muffled, distorted voice called from the hallway, speaking through a tactical comms unit. "Federal Asset Retrieval Division. Stand down immediately."
Marcus exchanged a quick, knowing glance with Vivienne. There was no such agency as the Federal Asset Retrieval Division within the Department of Defense. It was a privatized security detail, likely deployed by the remaining shadow board members who wanted the Project Vanguard ledger destroyed before it could reach the Secretary of Defense.
"We are inside a designated federal crime scene," Vivienne called back, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the thick wood. "Identify yourselves and state your operational clearance code or be fired upon."
The response from the hallway was immediate and violent.
A heavy breaching charge slammed against the wooden frame of the door. With a deafening roar and a blinding flash of white smoke, the entire locking mechanism blew inward, sending splinters of oak flying across the room.
Marcus fired two precise warning shots into the upper doorframe, forcing the advancing figures to duck back into the hallway. Through the drifting smoke, two men in heavy tactical gear rushed the threshold, their weapons raised.
Vivienne moved with blinding speed, sidestepping the initial rush and driving the butt of her pistol hard into the shoulder blade of the lead operative. The man staggered forward, crashing heavily against the reading table and sending the evidence pouches sliding across the floor.
Marcus engaged the second operative, sweeping his legs out from under him and pinning him to the Persian rug with a swift, crushing knee to his chest, pressing the barrel of his weapon firmly against the man's flak jacket.
"Don't move," Marcus ordered, his voice echoing menacingly in the smoky room.
The first operative managed to regain his footing, lunging toward Vivienne with a tactical combat knife drawn, aiming directly for her throat. Vivienne ducked beneath the blade, spinning sharply to use the man's own momentum against him, slamming him headfirst into the stone fireplace mantel. The man went limp instantly, slumping unconscious onto the hearth.
Silence descended upon the library once more, broken only by the crackle of distant thunder outside and the heavy breathing of the two victors.

Vivienne holstered her weapon, walking over to the fallen operative’s tactical vest to retrieve a dropped encrypted radio handset, the green transmission light blinking steadily.
