Chapter 5 - The Confession

The interrogation room in the federal holding facility smelled of bleach, cold steel, and stale coffee. A single overhead bulb cast a harsh, glaring circle of light onto the aluminum table where Eleanor Vance sat. Her dark blue evening gown was stained with mud from the airfield, and her elaborate updo had completely collapsed, leaving dull blonde strands hanging loosely around her gaunt face. She refused to look at the two-way mirror, staring instead at her own trembling, ring-adorned hands.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and Vivienne walked in, carrying a single manila folder. She wore her complete white military service dress uniform, the gold braid on her shoulders catching the overhead light. She pulled out the metal chair opposite Eleanor and sat down with agonizing slowness, placing the folder precisely in the center of the table.
Eleanor finally raised her head, her eyes bloodshot and filled with a mixture of bitter hatred and profound exhaustion.
"You always were an ungrateful, vindictive little parasite," Eleanor rasped, her voice cracking with dry rage. "Your father was a weak fool who deserved to lose everything he owned. He couldn't manage money if his life depended on it."
Vivienne did not blink. She did not raise her voice. She simply opened the folder, revealing a single bank statement bearing Eleanor’s signature from ten years ago—the exact date her father’s pension was first illegally seized.
"He was an honorable man," Vivienne said softly, every word enunciated with crystal clarity. "He trusted you because you were his sister-in-law. You promised to manage his medical trust while he was deployed overseas. Instead, you stripped his account to fund your debutante galas and buy Julian’s silence."
Eleanor let out a dry, hacking laugh, leaning forward into the harsh light.
"And what do you think this little crusade of yours will accomplish?" Eleanor mocked, her eyes flashing with defiance. "The courts will drag this out for a decade. I’ll be dead of old age before a judge ever signs a guilty verdict. You haven't won anything, Vivienne."
Vivienne closed the folder with a sharp snap that echoed loudly in the small concrete room. She leaned across the table, her dark eyes locking onto Eleanor’s with a terrifying intensity.
"I don't need a court to find you guilty, Eleanor," Vivienne whispered. "Julian has already signed a full confession in exchange for federal immunity. He gave us the names of every senator, judge, and corrupt board member who took bribes from your foundation."
Eleanor’s defiant smirk vanished instantly, the color draining entirely from her face.
"Julian... signed?" she choked out, her hands gripping the edge of the aluminum table so hard her knuckles turned ghostly white.

Before Eleanor could recover from the devastating blow, the door behind Vivienne opened again, and a federal marshal stepped inside, placing a heavy set of cold steel handcuffs onto the table.
