Chapter 7 - The Hidden Ledger

The old Victorian mansion on the outskirts of Arlington sat shrouded in overgrown ivy and weeping willow trees, forgotten by the modern city surrounding it. It was Eleanor’s private estate, sealed by federal marshals twenty-four hours earlier. Using her authorized military clearance and a federal search warrant, Vivienne stood in the cavernous, dust-filled library on the third floor, shining a heavy-duty tactical flashlight along the rows of ancient leather-bound ledgers.
Marcus stood near the shattered French doors, keeping watch over the dark, sprawling gardens below while the rain began to patter against the windowpanes.
"The federal inventory team missed a compartment behind the mahogany bookcase," Marcus called out softly, his voice echoing in the hollow room. "Julian mentioned it in his debriefing notes before they took him to the federal penitentiary this morning."
Vivienne walked over to the towering bookcase, running her gloved fingers along the intricately carved wooden molding until she felt a hidden brass latch. With a sharp click, a concealed wall panel swung inward, revealing a small, climate-controlled safe built directly into the thick stone foundation of the house.
Inside the safe sat a single, heavy steel lockbox stamped with the crest of the Department of Defense from the 1970s.
Vivienne pulled the lockbox out, setting it carefully on the mahogany reading table as a cloud of ancient dust rose into the air. She used the master combination key provided in Julian’s confession file, turning the dial three times to the left and twice to the right. The heavy steel lid popped open with a satisfying, metallic click.
Inside lay a stack of yellowed, fragile documents, military service records, and a black leather journal with gold-leaf lettering on the spine: Project Vanguard - Master Ledger 1978.
Vivienne carefully opened the journal, the brittle paper crackling under her fingers. The first page was covered in handwritten notes detailing an illegal transfer of military intelligence funds used to launch the St. Clair Foundation as a front for political lobbying and asset accumulation. But it was the signature at the bottom of the founding charter that made Vivienne’s breath catch in her throat.
It wasn't Eleanor’s signature. It belonged to General Arthur Vance—Vivienne’s grandfather, a man hailed as a national war hero whose bronze statue stood proudly in the center of the Pentagon courtyard.
Marcus stepped closer, peering over her shoulder at the yellowed page, his eyes widening in stunned disbelief.
"Your grandfather," Marcus whispered, the words hanging heavily in the dusty air. "The foundation wasn't built on stolen veteran pensions by Eleanor. It was founded on classified military slush funds embezzled during the height of the Cold War."

Vivienne stared at the signature, the entire foundation of her mission, her vengeance, and her family history instantly collapsing around her.
