Chapter 1 - The Chandelier And The Slap

The crystal chandelier above the St. Clair Foundation gala cast a cold, refracting diamond light across the ballroom floor, illuminating tables laden with silver and weeping orchids. Eleanor Vance stood rigid in her heavy dark blue lace evening gown, her blonde hair twisted into an immaculate, trembling updo. Her face was contorted with frantic rage, veins pulsing along her pale neck as she stared down the younger woman standing before her in a pristine white military service dress uniform, complete with ruffled skirt tiers and gleaming service medals.
Eleanor slammed her hand onto the mahogany table, the porcelain cups rattling in protest.
"Mother, transfer the money now!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cutting through the polite murmur of the elite guests like a jagged blade.
Captain Vivienne Vance did not flinch from the public spectacle, though her dark hair, styled in a matching updo, caught the amber glow of the wall sconces. She stared at the woman who had terrorized her childhood with terrifying calm. Eleanor’s hand lashed out in a sudden, violent arc, the sharp crack of flesh against skin echoing off the high vaulted ceiling. A red welt bloomed instantly across Vivienne’s left cheek.
Vivienne slowly turned her head back, her eyes welling with sudden, burning tears of sheer humiliation. Beside her, Commander Marcus Sterling stood ramrod straight in his black military mess dress uniform, his chest adorned with brass medals that chimed softly as he shifted his weight. Without a single word, Marcus grabbed Vivienne’s elbow, and they turned away abruptly from the glaring matriarch, cutting a sharp path through the parting crowd of horrified socialites.
Vivienne reached up slowly with a gloved hand, her trembling fingertips brushing the hot, stinging skin of her cheek. The tears welled in her eyes, trembling on her lashes, presenting a picture of absolute, broken vulnerability to the watching world. But as they rounded the heavy velvet curtains leading to the grand foyer, her expression shifted with terrifying speed. The tears vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating, predatory smile that chilled Marcus to the bone.
Vivienne turned her head slightly, her voice dropping into a dangerous, metallic whisper.
"Now it's your turn to lose everything."

Before Marcus could offer a word of comfort, heavy footsteps approached from the shadows of the arched doorway, blocking their exit entirely.
