Chapter 8 - Darkness Falling

The sudden plunge into darkness sent a fresh wave of panic rippling through the room. The emergency backup generators usually kicked in within three seconds, but this time, the mansion remained engulfed in an unnatural, heavy gloom. The faint red glow from the exit signs cast long, grotesque shadows across the expensive mahogany furniture and the tall bookshelves.

Julian moved with practiced, silent speed in the dark. He reached into the hidden compartment beneath the desk, pulling out a heavy, matte-black tactical flashlight and a small, secure burner phone that hadn't been activated in years. The beam of the flashlight cut a sharp white path through the dusty air, illuminating Leo, who stood frozen near the edge of the desk, and Clara, who was whimpering softly from the far side of the sofa.

"Stay close to me, Leo," Julian instructed in a sharp, urgent whisper. He rushed across the room and scooped Clara into his arms. The little girl buried her face in his neck, her pale pink dress catching the weak beam of the flashlight as she shook with quiet terror. "We're going out through the service stairwell behind the pantry. Mrs. Gable should be waiting there with the keys to the vintage land rover."

"What about the security cameras?" Leo asked, trailing closely behind Julian as they slipped out of the study and into the pitch-black hallway. The air felt colder out here, smelling faintly of ozone and burning plastic.

"Elena’s team disabled the main grid," Julian said, his boots clicking softly against the marble floor as they navigated the familiar corridors from memory. "That means our internal tracking is offline, but it also means the electronic locks on the perimeter gates are wide open. We have a five-minute window before the automated backup system reboots the perimeter defenses."

They moved swiftly, hugging the shadows of the expansive hallway where the initial confrontation had taken place hours earlier. The gift box and the white ribbon were still lying near the base of the wainscoting, stepped over and forgotten in the rush of survival.

As they rounded the corner toward the service wing, a sudden beam of white light swept across the opposite wall. Someone else was in the hallway, moving with calculated stealth. Julian yanked Leo behind a massive stone pillar, holding Clara tightly against his chest, holding his breath as the footsteps drew closer.

Through the gap in the stone, the beam of light illuminated a figure dressed in dark tactical gear, carrying a silenced firearm. It wasn't one of the regular estate guards; it was a professional operative, wearing a patchless uniform that signaled a covert corporate hit squad. Vance hadn't just come to threaten them with legal papers; he had initiated a hostile physical takeover.

The operative stopped just ten feet from their hiding spot, raising his weapon slightly as his radio crackled with static, broadcasting a chilling message in a low, distorted voice: "Target primary located. Sweep the west wing. Leave no survivors."
