Chapter 11 - Through the Iron Grating

"Found them!" a harsh, metallic voice shouted from the doorway, cutting through the low hum of the massive industrial boilers.

Julian didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins with blistering intensity. With a final, violent wrench, he snapped the last rusted bolt off the iron grating and kicked it inward. The heavy metal screen crashed onto the concrete floor of the tunnel with a loud, clattering echo.

"Get in, Leo! Now!" Julian barked, his voice dropping into a commanding tone that left no room for hesitation.

Leo dropped to his hands and knees without a second thought, scrambling hastily through the dark, damp opening of the brick drainage tunnel. Julian scooped Clara back up into his arms, ignoring the sharp edges of the exposed brickwork, and dove headfirst into the narrow opening just as a burst of suppressed gunfire shattered the heavy glass of a nearby pressure gauge. Steam hissed violently into the boiler room, filling the air with a blinding, scalding white fog.

They crawled furiously through the cramped, circular brick tunnel, the rough stone scraping against Julian’s back and shoulders as he shielded Clara with his body. Behind them, muffled shouts and the sound of heavy boots echoed down the pipe, but the narrow diameter of the drainage system prevented the armed operatives from pursuing them upright.

"Keep moving, Leo! Don't look back!" Julian urged, his voice raspy from the rising humidity and dust kicked up by their frantic scramble.

The tunnel sloped sharply downward for several yards before leveling off into a cool, concrete-lined conduit that smelled strongly of wet earth and decaying autumn leaves. After what felt like miles of suffocating darkness, a pale circle of moonlight appeared ahead, marking the rusted iron exit grate that opened up into the dense pine forest beyond the estate's perimeter fence.

Leo reached the end first, grabbing the rusted security bars of the outer exit grate and throwing his entire weight against them. With a loud snap of aged metal, the rusted hinges gave way, and the grating swung outward into the cool night air. Leo tumbled out onto the damp forest floor, coughing slightly as he filled his lungs with fresh oxygen.

Julian scrambled out immediately after, clutching Clara tightly in his arms. He rolled onto the soft pine needles, pulling Leo up beside him. They were outside the compound at last, hidden beneath the thick, protective canopy of the towering pine trees, far away from the glittering chandeliers and the glass cage of perfection.

But as Julian looked back toward the estate, the glowing amber lights of the main house standing proudly against the midnight sky told him the danger was far from over. Vance and Elena controlled the corporation, the police, and the legal system. Running into the woods was only buying them a few temporary hours.

"Where do we go now, Dad?" Leo asked, wiping a smudge of dirt from his white shirt, his eyes reflecting the pale moonlight as he looked up for answers.

Julian reached into his suit pocket, pulling out the burner phone he had retrieved from the study. He pressed the power button. The small screen flickered to life, displaying a single, unread text message from an unknown number—a message that contained the exact coordinates of the only person left in the world who could help them dismantle Elena's empire once and for all.
