Chapter 7 - The Master Suite

Julian let out a long, shuddering breath before reaching out and pressing the speakerphone button on the heavy mahogany console. The harsh, static-laced sound of heavy breathing filled the study, followed immediately by Elena’s voice, sounding eerily calm and devoid of the hysterical rage she had displayed earlier in the hallway.

"Did Vance leave you my little parting gift, Julian?" Elena’s voice purred through the speaker, sounding entirely too close, as if she were standing right outside the door rather than upstairs. "He always was a bit too dramatic for my taste, but he does know how to get results."

Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. "You brought Vance into this house, Elena. You violated the terms of our separation agreement. If you think those custody papers hold any weight in a court of law, you're forgetting that I still have the original financial ledgers from your father's trial safely locked in a federal vault."

A sharp, cruel laugh echoed from the speaker. "You think a federal vault still matters, darling? Vance didn't just come here to threaten us with adoption records. While you were busy playing hero downstairs, my tech team remotely accessed your home server. Every single encrypted file you spent ten years collecting on my family... has just been downloaded to an off-site server in the Caymans."

Julian’s blood turned to ice. He stood up so fast his leather chair rolled backward and slammed against the bookshelf. He grabbed his encrypted personal tablet from the charging dock on the side table. The screen flickered violently, lines of code scrolling past in a blur of crimson text before going completely black. The system had been wiped clean.

Leo watched his father’s reaction, his heart pounding against his ribs. He didn't need to read code to know that something catastrophic had just happened. The absolute control Julian always maintained had just been shattered in a matter of seconds.

"You're ruined, Julian," Elena’s voice continued, dripping with malicious satisfaction. "Without those files, you have no leverage against my family. And by tomorrow morning, the board will vote you out as CEO of the holding company. You'll be stripped of your wealth, your estate, and most importantly... your precious adopted children."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Julian stood motionless in the center of the study, the dark screen of the tablet clutched tightly in his hand. The illusion of safety had completely evaporated. They were no longer protected by the walls of the estate, their wealth, or his legal authority. They were completely exposed to enemies who played without rules.

"Pack a bag, Leo," Julian said, his voice dangerously quiet as he turned to face the boy. "We're leaving this house tonight."

Leo’s eyes widened with shock and determination. "What about Clara? We can't just run away, Dad. Where would we even go?"

Before Julian could answer, the lights in the entire estate flickered violently and then cut out completely, plunging the grand study into absolute, pitch-black darkness, save for the faint emergency glow of the hallway exit signs. From somewhere down the long corridor, the heavy sound of approaching footsteps began to march toward them.
