Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Corridor

Mrs. Gable stepped across the threshold, her old knees clicking faintly in the quiet room. Her eyes darted quickly toward the children on the sofa before fixing on Julian with an expression of grave concern. She clutched a silver dusting cloth in her wrinkled hands, twisting it back and forth as if trying to wring water from dry fabric.
"Mr. Julian," Mrs. Gable murmured, keeping her voice low so it wouldn't carry across the high ceilings. "Mrs. Elena has locked herself in the master suite. She threw a vase against the vanity mirror. The staff is clearing the glass, but... she’s demanding her phone. She’s calling someone, sir."
Julian’s jaw tightened. He glanced back at Leo and Clara. Leo was watching Mrs. Gable with sharp, calculating eyes, absorbing every word. Children in this house grew up too fast; they learned to read the ambient danger of the adults long before they learned fractions.
"Who is she calling?" Julian asked, his voice flat and controlled.
"I couldn't hear the name, sir," Mrs. Gable replied, lowering her gaze to the floorboards. "She was whispering, but her voice had that sharp edge it gets when she's talking to her brother. You know how volatile Mr. Vance can be when he thinks his sister is being mistreated."
Julian closed his eyes for a brief second. Vance. The mere mention of Elena’s older brother brought a dark shadow over the estate. Vance controlled a significant block of shares in Julian’s holding company, a leverage he used ruthlessly to keep Elena entrenched in this lavish, miserable marriage. It was a union built on corporate alliance and mutual blackmail, entirely devoid of genuine affection. And now, after Julian had physically struck Elena in the heat of a family dispute, Vance had all the ammunition he needed to launch a full-scale corporate and personal war.
"Keep the staff downstairs," Julian instructed quietly. "Do not let Elena leave the suite under any circumstances. If she tries, call security. I'll handle Vance when he calls."
"It's not just Vance you need to worry about, Mr. Julian," Mrs. Gable whispered, taking a half-step closer. She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a small, crumpled photograph, pressing it quickly into Julian's palm before retreating. "I found this tucked behind the grandfather clock in the downstairs foyer. It fell out of that gift box before Miss Clara dropped it."
Julian looked down at the photograph in his hand. The blood drained from his face. It was an old Polaroid, faded at the edges, showing a younger Elena standing outside a maternity clinic holding a newborn infant wrapped in a blue blanket—an infant that was never brought home to this estate.

When Julian looked back up, Mrs. Gable was already backing out of the study, quietly pulling the heavy oak door shut, leaving him alone with a secret that threatened to blow their entire world apart.
