Chapter 13 - The Alliance of Ghosts

The interior of the cabin was cramped, smelling strongly of old paper, roasted coffee, and gun oil. A small wood-burning stove in the corner radiated a comforting, intense heat that immediately thawed the chill from the children's bones. Sarah Vance guided Clara gently toward a worn velvet armchair, draping a heavy woolen blanket over the little girl's shoulders, while Leo sat down stiffly on a wooden stool near the stove.
Julian stood near the small window, keeping watch outside while Sarah poured hot black coffee from a chipped ceramic pot into two metal mugs, handing one to Julian.
"I thought you retired from the bureau years ago, Sarah," Julian said, taking a cautious sip of the bitter coffee, the warmth spreading instantly through his chest. "I never expected you to still be tracking the wreckage of the trafficking ring."
"Corruption like that doesn't just disappear when a prosecutor wins a headline trial, Julian," Sarah replied sharply, leaning back against a cluttered workbench covered in old radios and encrypted communication gear. "Elena’s family merely rebranded. They took over the front companies, integrated into the corporate elite, and kept you caged inside that glittering estate to keep an eye on the primary witnesses—the children."
Leo looked up from the stove, his eyes wide with a mix of shock and validation. "You mean... we were never really safe there? Even in our own home?"
Sarah looked down at the boy with a deep, sorrowful empathy. "You were living in a gilded prison, Leo. Julian tried to shield you, but Elena and her brother Vance were always using your existence as leverage to control his decisions."
Julian clenched his mug tightly, his knuckles whitening. "They wiped our home server tonight. They took the encrypted financial ledgers. Without those files, we have no legal proof to bring them down before the board vote tomorrow morning."
Sarah smiled faintly, a knowing glint in her sharp eyes. She reached down beside her stool and pulled out a heavy, physical-grade military storage drive encased in reinforced titanium. She placed it squarely on the center of the wooden table with a dull thud.
"Digital files can be hacked, wiped, or remotely erased from the Caymans," Sarah said calmly. "Physical evidence backed up on offline storage and hidden in a federally protected vault... that's a different story entirely."
Julian stared at the titanium drive, recognizing the standard-issue case immediately. "Where did you get this?"
"Mrs. Gable slipped it into my contact drop three days ago," Sarah answered smoothly. "She’s been working with me since day one. Inside that drive is every bank transfer, every shell corporation, and every adoption payoff signed by Elena’s father—including the original birth records proving that Clara and Leo were legally placed under your direct protection, completely cutting Elena and her family out of the legal chain."

The tension in the cramped cabin seemed to lift slightly, replaced by a sudden, electric surge of hope. But before Julian could reach for the drive, the battered radio receiver on Sarah's workbench crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by a voice that made everyone freeze in terror.
