Chapter 4 - The Polaroid Secret

The study felt suddenly devoid of oxygen. Julian stared down at the faded Polaroid in his hand, his thumb tracing the jagged white border. The date stamp in the corner was blurred by time, but the faces were unmistakable. Younger Elena stood on the concrete steps of a nondescript red-brick building, her expression devoid of the bitter malice she wore today, replaced instead by a haunting, hollow resignation. She was looking down at the bundle in her arms with a strange detachment.
Leo stood up from the sofa, his curiosity overcoming the lingering tension in the room. He walked quietly across the rug, his white shirt catching the dim light of the desk lamp. He stopped beside Julian, his eyes dropping to the photograph in his father's hand.
"Who is that?" Leo asked, his voice barely a whisper, carrying a sudden, inexplicable chill. "Is that Elena when she was younger?"
Julian quickly closed his hand over the photograph, hiding it against his chest. "It's nothing, Leo. Just an old picture from before we moved into this house."
"You're lying," Leo said flatly, looking up into Julian's eyes with an unnerving intensity. "My heart beats fast when you lie, Dad. You taught me how to read micro-expressions, remember? You told me people touch their noses or look to the left when they're hiding something crucial."
Julian sighed, the armor of parental infallibility cracking entirely. He opened his hand again, letting Leo see the image. Clara remained on the sofa, clutching her pale pink dress, watching them with wide, fearful eyes, sensing that the fragile peace of their household had just been shattered beyond repair.
"It's a picture of Elena," Julian admitted quietly, choosing his words with agonizing care. "Before you and Clara were brought into this family. Long before I ever met her."
"Why did Mrs. Gable look so scared when she gave it to you?" Leo pressed, his mind working at a rapid pace that defied his young age. "She never hands you things like that unless it's an emergency. And why was it inside the gift box Clara was holding?"
Before Julian could formulate an evasive answer, a sharp, metallic crash echoed from the hallway outside the study. It sounded like the heavy brass security gate at the end of the corridor being forced open. Heavy, purposeful footsteps began to march toward the heavy oak doors, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of raised voices and the frantic protests of the household staff.

Julian shoved the Polaroid deep into his suit pocket and stepped in front of the desk, shielding Leo and Clara. The oak door burst open without a knock, and standing in the doorway was Vance, his broad shoulders filling the frame, his eyes locked onto Julian with murderous intent.
