Chapter 10 - The Ambush in the Dark

The glowing ember of the cigarette drifted downward as the unfamiliar figure exhaled a thick cloud of smoke into the damp air of the underground garage. Julian pulled the heavy steel door shut just enough to keep the latch from clicking, his mind racing through tactical options. Mrs. Gable was nowhere in sight. The old housekeeper had either been intercepted by Vance’s men or had successfully hidden herself away, leaving the escape route compromised.
"Dad, what's wrong?" Leo whispered, his hand still clamped tightly onto Julian’s belt loop. The boy’s voice was remarkably steady, though his breathing was shallow and rapid. "Is Mrs. Gable out there?"
"No," Julian replied quietly, keeping his lips close to Leo’s ear. "Someone else is guarding the vehicle. We need an alternate route."
"There has to be another way out," Leo insisted, his eyes adjusting to the gloom as he scanned the dim corners of the subterranean bay. "When we explored the estate last summer, you showed us the old drainage tunnel behind the boiler room. It leads out past the perimeter fence into the woods."
Julian stared at the boy in quiet astonishment. He had completely forgotten about that architectural quirk, a relic from when the estate was constructed a century ago. It was a tight, unpleasant squeeze, but it bypassed the open courtyard where Vance’s operatives were undoubtedly waiting.
"Good catch, Leo," Julian murmured, pride warring with the cold terror gripping his chest. He shifted Clara slightly, adjusting her weight in his arms. The little girl had finally stopped crying, her exhaustion taking over as she rested her head heavily against his shoulder, her pale pink dress stained with dust from the stairwell.
They turned away from the steel fire door and crept silently along the concrete perimeter of the basement, keeping close to the dark shadows cast by towering stacks of old furniture and wooden crates. The air grew warmer and increasingly humid as they approached the ancient industrial boiler room, its massive iron tanks humming with a deep, rhythmic vibration that helped mask the sound of their footsteps.
Julian pushed open the heavy iron door of the boiler room. Inside, a single overhead bulb flickered erratically, casting jagged, dancing shadows across the brick walls. Against the far back wall, half-concealed behind a rusted water heater, was a low iron grating that covered the entrance to the old drainage tunnel.
Julian knelt down, setting Clara gently on a clean patch of concrete, and began unscrewing the heavy rusted bolts holding the grating in place. The metal protested with a high-pitched screech that echoed sharply off the brick walls.

Suddenly, the flickering overhead bulb went out entirely, plunging the boiler room into total darkness. At the exact same second, the heavy wooden door behind them slammed wide open, flooding the room with the harsh, blinding white glare of a tactical flashlight.
