Chapter 1 - The Shattered Ribbon

The hallway echoed with a sharp, piercing resonance that made the expensive wainscoting seem to shudder. Light poured through the high arched windows of the estate, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the tense air. Clara stood frozen against the floral wallpaper, her small hands trembling as they gripped a small gift box adorned with a pristine white satin ribbon. Her light brown hair, woven into tight braided pigtails, felt heavy against her neck. Her pale pink dress, usually a symbol of innocent grace, now felt like a suffocating costume in the blinding glare of the afternoon sun.
Elena glared down at her, her posture rigid and her face twisted into a mask of pure fury. The green dress she wore shimmered like poisonous jade under the crystal chandelier. Elena’s finger stabbed aggressively toward the trembling child, slicing through the space between them.
"You ruined everything the second you touch it!" Elena yelled, her voice dripping with venom that seemed entirely disproportionate to the small cardboard box in Clara’s grasp.
Before the cruel echo of Elena’s words could fully fade against the marble floor, Leo stepped forward. His short brown hair was slightly tousled, and his crisp white shirt and black pants seemed armor-like as he planted himself squarely between Elena and his younger sister. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle twitched near his cheek.
"Stop yelling at her!" Leo shouted back, his voice cracking slightly with the raw courage of a protective older brother.
Julian stepped out from the shadows near the curved staircase, his tall frame clad in a flawless black suit and a stark white shirt with a silk tie. His expression was cold, carved from marble, but his eyes burned with a dark, warning fire as he looked directly at Elena.
"You scared them one more time and we're done," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, cutting through the chaos like a razor.
Elena sneered, stepping closer. "They are weak, just like—"
Before she could finish, Julian’s hand moved with shocking speed. A sharp crack echoed through the hallway as his palm struck Elena’s face. She stumbled backward in sheer shock, her shoulder slamming hard against the wall, her breath hissing out in disbelief. Julian immediately swept Leo and Clara into a fierce, protective embrace, shielding them from the woman who stared at him with wide, betrayed eyes.
"You are not going near them again," Julian whispered harshly into Leo’s hair.

Clara buried her face in Julian’s black suit jacket, her small fingers finally loosening their death grip on the gift box. As the white ribbon slipped off the lid and fluttered to the floor, a folded piece of paper slid out from the box, revealing handwriting that made Julian’s blood run cold.
