Chapter 8: The Legal Ambush**

At seven o'clock the next morning, the legal storm broke.
Three black SUVs pulled into the parking lot of *The Blue Spruce*. Two attorneys representing the Vance Estate stepped out, flanked by a representative from the county social services division carrying an emergency custody order.
Attorney Robert Sterling (no relation to Maya), Eleanor's chief counsel, pushed open the diner door with cold corporate confidence.
"Julian Vance," Robert announced, holding up a manila folder. "By court order issued by Judge Miller at six-fifteen this morning, Maya Sterling is remanded into temporary protective custody of the state pending an emergency welfare hearing. Furthermore, all materials currently in her possession are subject to an immediate gag order."
Martha grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from behind the counter and stepped forward. "You get out of my restaurant before I show you what forty years of diner grease feels like."
"Stand down, Martha," Julian said calmly, rising from the booth.
He didn't panic. He pulled his own smartphone from his jacket pocket and placed it on the counter on speakerphone.
"Attorney Sterling," a booming, unmistakable voice echoed from the phone. "This is District Judge Evelyn Vance-Torres of the Federal Third Circuit. I have just issued a federal subpoena for Maya Sterling as a key witness under direct federal protection. Judge Miller's state-level order is superseded and legally void."
Robert Sterling’s smug expression dissolved instantly. He stared at the phone in utter disbelief.

"Have a wonderful morning, gentlemen," Julian said with a serene smile. "We will see you at the federal building."
