By late afternoon, the federal grand jury returned twenty-four felony indictments against the executive board of Vance Chemical and Eleanor Vance personally, including charges of wire fraud, environmental concealment, and witness intimidation.
All campaign operations were officially suspended, and federal regulators froze the Vance corporate assets to establish an immediate, multi-million-dollar medical trust and clean-water infrastructure fund for the town of Oakhaven.
When Maya walked out of the heavy brass doors of the federal courthouse, the late afternoon sun bathed the plaza in warm gold.
The crowd of thousands did not roar with aggressive triumph. Instead, a wave of heartfelt applause rippled through the gathering, followed by an overwhelming silence as Maya reached the bottom step.
A little boy from Oakhaven—around seven years old, wearing a clean school jacket—walked forward and handed Maya a small bunch of wild daisies tied with a bright blue ribbon.
"Thank you, Maya," the boy said quietly. "Now we can drink the water at school again."
Maya held the flowers close to her chest and smiled, her eyes brimming with tears of relief. "My grandma said we're all responsible for taking care of each other's gardens."
