Chapter 7: Memories of Clara**

Inside the quiet booth at *The Blue Spruce*, Maya slowly dipped a triangle of grilled cheese into her bowl of tomato soup. The warmth of the diner seemed to thaw the cold fear that had lingered inside her since her grandmother’s funeral.
"My grandma always wore a cyan apron," Maya whispered, smoothing the lapel of her jacket. "When Julian bought me this suit so I could go into the gala, I asked for this exact color. I wanted her to feel like she was standing right next to me."
Julian smiled gently, his eyes heavy with emotion. "Your grandmother was the bravest person I ever met, Maya. When I was just twenty years old and started working at the company headquarters, Clara was the only person who told me the truth about what the board was doing. Everyone else was terrified of my mother. But Clara treated me like a human being, not an heir."
"She told me you were a good person," Maya said simply. "She said you were just trapped in a cage made of gold."
Julian looked down at his coffee cup, feeling the weight of those words pierce straight to his core. He had spent a decade feeling helpless, watching wealth insulate his family from morality. But seeing an eight-year-old child stand unflinchingly against the Vance empire had shattered the golden bars of that cage forever.
"We go to the federal courthouse at nine in the morning," Julian said quietly. "We hand over the physical ledger to Special Prosecutor Henderson. Are you ready for that?"

Maya looked at the photo of her grandmother tucked inside the plastic pocket of her small backpack. "I'm ready. Grandma said when you do the right thing, you never have to walk alone."
