Chapter 2: The Son Who Broke Rank**

Julian Vance had spent his entire life being molded into the polished successor of the Vance dynasty. At thirty-four, he possessed the jawline of a statesman and the charisma of a born leader. But beneath the designer suit was a man burdened by years of complicity and manufactured smiles.
"Julian," Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic facade slipping another inch. "What is the meaning of this? Take this child out the service entrance before the press catches wind."
"The press is already watching, Mother," Julian said, gesturing subtly toward the back balcony where several credentialed journalists had begun raising their smartphones and broadcasting live feeds to hundreds of thousands of viewers.
Maya took a step closer to Julian, slipping her small hand into his. The gesture was simple, completely unforced, and devastating to everyone in the room.
"You brought her here," Eleanor whispered, her knuckles turning white around her gold clutch. "You brought this street orphan into our private gala."
"She’s not an orphan, Mother," Julian answered, his voice ringing with quiet authority. "Her name is Maya Sterling. She is the granddaughter of Clara Sterling—the head accountant who worked for Vance Chemical for thirty-two years. The woman who died three months ago without a single penny of her pension because you had her blacklisted."
A ripple of murmurs tore through the ballroom. High-profile donors and foreign diplomats began exchanging uneasy glances. Eleanor’s foundation was built on the slogan *'Integrity and Compassion for Every Working Family.'* Maya held up the small black book. "My grandmother told me before she went to sleep for the last time," Maya said, looking directly at the cameras. "She said truth is like water. If you try to bury it in the dirt, it just finds its way to the roots until the whole tree falls."

Eleanor’s breath hitched. She realized in that instant that this was not a child’s tantrum; it was a meticulously orchestrated reckoning.
