Chapter 10: The Federal Hearing**

The interior of Courtroom 4B was packed to maximum capacity. Federal marshals stood along the perimeter walls as Judge Evelyn Vance-Torres—known across the state for her incorruptible impartiality—took her seat at the high mahogany bench.

On the defense side sat Eleanor Vance, looking pristine in a dark navy business suit, though the dark circles under her foundation betrayed a sleepless night. Her team of six elite attorneys surrounded her like a fortress.

Julian and Maya sat at the witness table alongside Special Prosecutor Marcus Henderson.

"The court will hear the preliminary submission of evidence in the matter of *United States v. Vance Chemical Enterprises*," Judge Vance-Torres declared, adjusting her spectacles. "Special Prosecutor, present your witness."

Marcus Henderson stood. "Your Honor, we call Maya Sterling, representing the estate and records of Clara Sterling."

Maya walked up the two steps to the witness stand with steady determination. Because of her height, the bailiff brought a wooden booster step so she could reach the microphone comfortably.

"Maya," Judge Vance-Torres said with unexpected gentleness. "Do you understand what it means to tell the truth in this courtroom?"

"Yes, Your Honor," Maya replied clearly. "It means saying what really happened, even if it makes powerful people uncomfortable."

A quiet hum of approval moved through the gallery before the judge tapped her gavel once to restore order.
