Chapter 12: A Mother's Final Appeal**

During a brief thirty-minute recess before the formal indictments were issued, Julian walked down the marble hallway outside the courtroom to get Maya a bottle of apple juice.
Near the end of the corridor, Eleanor stepped out from a private conference room, her security detail keeping a distance. She looked stripped of her aura, her posture visibly sunken.
"Julian," she called out, her voice raspy.
Julian stopped, turning to face his mother. There was no anger in his eyes—only a profound, mournful sadness.
"Why did you do this to our family?" Eleanor asked, her voice cracking for the first time in memory. "I built this empire for you. Every connection, every dollar, every campaign was to secure your place at the table."
"You built it on the backs of people who had no way to defend themselves, Mother," Julian replied softly. "You didn't build an empire for me. You built a monument to your own fear of being ordinary."
Eleanor took a step closer, reaching out to touch his arm, but Julian took a small step back.
"I loved you, Mother," Julian said, his eyes glistening. "And because I loved you, I couldn't let you keep poisoning our souls just to keep your crown. It's over."

Eleanor's hand fell back to her side. For the first time in sixty years, the matriarch had nothing left to say.
