Chapter 4 - Ashes of a Forgotten Past

The journal in the stranger's hand seemed to suck all the oxygen out of the luxurious living room, leaving everyone gasping for air. The heavy crystal pitcher in Eleanor’s hand suddenly felt impossibly heavy, her arm trembling under the strain. She looked from the worn leather cover of the book back to Julian, whose expression had shifted from panic to a crushing, resigned despair.
“Nothing is ever truly destroyed, Eleanor,” the intruder said softly, stepping further into the room and letting the heavy oak door click shut behind him. “Especially not secrets bought with embezzled funds and buried under layers of corporate restructuring. Isn't that right, Mr. Vance? Or should I use your family's original surname?”
Clara let out a sharp gasp, pulling little Lily closer into her lap, shielding the child’s face against her shoulder. The seven-year-old began to cry silently, her small shoulders shaking rhythmically as the tense atmosphere pressed down on them all.
“Leave the girl out of this, Marcus,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, pleading whisper. “She has nothing to do with what happened back then. She was born long after the accounts were closed.”
Marcus chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that lacked any warmth. “Blood remembers, Julian. And debts accumulate interest over decades. You thought you could buy a new life, a luxury penthouse, a compliant wife, and pretend the past was just a bad dream? You built your entire empire on stolen glass, and now it’s shattering all around you.”
Eleanor slowly lowered her arm, setting the heavy crystal pitcher down on a nearby mahogany side table with a dull thud. The immediate physical threat was gone, but the emotional devastation was only beginning to set in. She walked toward Marcus with measured, deliberate steps, her gold satin dress whispering against the marble floor.
“What does he mean, Julian?” Eleanor asked, her voice dangerously quiet, devoid of the theatrical rage from earlier. “What secrets are you and this man talking about? What does Clara have to do with any of this?”
Julian looked away, unable to meet his wife’s piercing gaze. “I tried to protect you, Eleanor. From the very beginning, I tried to keep you safe from the fallout of my father’s mistakes.”

“Don't blame your father for your own choices,” Marcus interrupted, tossing the leather journal onto the glass coffee table where it landed with a heavy thud. “Open it, Mrs. Vance. Read page forty-two. You will find out who really funded the gold dress you're wearing right now.”
