Chapter 10 - Darkness in the Service Corridor

The abrupt silence behind the heavy steel fire door was almost as terrifying as Marcus’s screams. Only the low hum of the emergency battery packs and the distant, muffled wail of the building’s primary sprinkler system penetrated the narrow service corridor. Total darkness enveloped them, broken only by the faint, rhythmic pulse of a single red indicator light above the manual stairwell exit.

Julian exhaled a shuddering breath, his hand sliding along the cold concrete wall until his fingers brushed against the heavy iron push-bar of the emergency door. “Stay close to me,” he whispered, his voice trembling slightly in the gloom. “The stairwell leads straight down to the underground parking garage. We have minutes before Marcus finds another way around.”

Eleanor stood a few paces behind him, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. The soft whisper of her gold satin dress was lost against the heavy sound of their collective breathing. She could feel the crushing weight of the revelations pressing down on her chest. The man she had called her husband for five years was a stranger, an architect of corporate theft who had used her as a decorative shield while hiding his disgraced bloodline in the servants' quarters.

“You planned this, didn't you?” Eleanor’s voice sliced through the dark corridor, quiet yet laced with a frozen fury that made Julian flinch. “Even bringing Clara and Lily into this house. It wasn't just protection. You were building an escape route, using them as human collateral if your crimes ever caught up with you.”

Julian turned back slowly, though he could barely make out the silhouette of her face in the dim red glow. “I protected them from the streets, Eleanor. And I protected you from Marcus. If I hadn't brought Clara here, your uncle would have used her to strip every remaining asset you didn't even know you possessed.”

Clara adjusted her grip on little Lily, who had fallen into an exhausted, tearful slumber against her shoulder. The young maid’s voice was remarkably steady when she spoke into the dark. “He’s telling the truth about Marcus, Mrs. Vance. My uncle is a monster. He didn't want us back; he wanted our signatures to clear the last of the family trusts.”

Before Julian could reply, a sharp, metallic clang echoed from the other side of the fire door, followed by the terrifying sound of a heavy pry bar biting into the steel frame. Marcus was forcing his way through.
