Chapter 2 - The Crimson Ribbon of Truth

The word hung in the breathless silence of the luxurious penthouse, vibrating against the crystal pendants of the grand chandelier overhead. Julian felt the room spin. He had spent years crafting an impenetrable facade of wealth, success, and domestic perfection, yet a single word from a seven-year-old girl in a maid's uniform had dismantled it in seconds.
“Lily, stay quiet,” Clara hissed, her hand shooting out to grab the hem of the child’s blue dress, her dark eyes flashing with desperate warning. But it was too late.
Eleanor’s grip on the glass pitcher tightened until her fingers turned translucent. A slow, terrifying smile spread across her lips, devoid of humor, rich with the venom of a long-gestating vengeance. She looked down at Clara, then back at Julian, whose face had gone completely grey beneath the warm glow of the terrace lights.
“Did you hear that, Julian?” Eleanor asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy purr. “The girl has a voice after all. And she knows quite a bit about family heirlooms, don't you think? Such a smart little thing. Almost as if she’s been rehearsing that line for years.”
Julian took a slow, measured step forward, holding his hands out in a placating gesture. “Eleanor, please. Step away from the glass. Whatever you think you know, whatever documents you found in the study, it’s not what it looks like. Let’s sit down and talk about this like adults, not with threats and shattered glass.”
“Adults?” Eleanor scoffed, her eyes flashing with sudden, suppressed fury. “You talk about adulthood while keeping a second family hidden in the servants' quarters right beneath my nose? Do you take me for a fool, Julian? I watched you slip money into Clara’s apron pocket last Tuesday. I heard the promises you made behind closed doors.”
“You misunderstood the context entirely!” Julian snapped, the restrained facade finally cracking. “Clara is not who you think she is. If you drop that pitcher, you destroy the only leverage we have against the people who are actually coming for us!”
May you like
Eleanor paused, her arm trembling slightly. But before Julian could close the distance, the heavy oak front door of the penthouse slowly swung open on its hinges, revealing a figure standing in the doorway holding an identical glass pitcher.
