Chapter 14 - The Federal Intervention

The black SUV blocked their path with precision, its emergency strobes flashing brightly in the afternoon sun. Two men in crisp federal dark suits stepped out of the vehicle instantly, their hands resting near their holsters as they approached the utility van with practiced caution.
Thomas threw the van into park, raising his hands slowly in plain view. “Federal Marshals,” Thomas murmured under his breath, glancing back at Julian and Eleanor. “Looks like the automated alert reached the task force faster than I anticipated.”
Julian let out a long, slow breath, closing his eyes for a brief moment before turning to Eleanor. “This is where it ends for me,” he whispered, his voice steady despite the overwhelming gravity of the impending arrest. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key, placing it gently into Eleanor’s palm. “The key to the safety deposit box at the central bank. Everything inside belongs to you now—the real documents, the untainted deeds, and the truth about your family’s legacy.”
Eleanor looked down at the brass key resting in her hand, feeling its cold weight against her skin. The gold satin dress she wore felt like a relic from another lifetime, a costume of deception that she was finally shedding. She didn't pull her hand away when Julian’s fingers lingered for a fraction of a second against hers.
The side door of the van slid open with a sharp clatter, and a tall, stern-looking female marshal peered inside, her badge gleaming in the sunlight. “Julian Vance? Step out of the vehicle slowly with your hands where we can see them.”
Julian nodded, casting one final, lingering look at Clara and the sleeping little girl before ducking his head and stepping out onto the asphalt. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed sharply over the hum of city traffic, sealing his fate as the federal agents escorted him toward the waiting SUV.
Eleanor watched through the grimy windshield as the door of the SUV closed behind her husband. She felt an overwhelming emptiness, but beneath the grief, a strange, terrifying sense of freedom began to take root.

Thomas shifted the van back into gear, preparing to pull away from the checkpoint, when a heavy envelope was tossed through the open window by one of the remaining agents, landing squarely in Eleanor’s lap. She picked it up, her fingers trembling as she broke the red wax seal.
