Chapter 13 - Sunlight and Surveillance

The utility van burst out of the subterranean parking ramp into the glaring afternoon sunlight, temporarily blinding everyone inside. Thomas jerked the steering wheel hard to the left, merging smoothly into the chaotic downtown traffic flow of the metropolis while keeping a close eye on the rearview mirror for any signs of pursuit.

Clara cradled little Lily against her chest, the child still resting peacefully despite the deafening gunfire and frantic escape. The young maid looked up, her dark eyes reflecting a mixture of exhaustion and cautious hope as the towering glass skyscrapers blurred past the van’s grimy windows.

“Is he following us?” Clara asked quietly, her voice trembling slightly as she smoothed the rumpled blue fabric of her maid uniform.

Thomas shook his head, keeping his eyes fixed firmly on the road ahead. “Marcus won't chase us out into the open streets with federal marshals already alerted. The emergency signal from the penthouse triggered an automated audit on Julian’s corporate holdings. By the time Marcus gets his car out of the garage, the authorities will already have his assets frozen nationwide.”

Eleanor turned her gaze slowly toward Julian, who was sitting silently beside her on the bench seat, staring down at his empty hands. The polished, untouchable corporate titan who had commanded boardrooms and lived in a luxurious penthouse was entirely gone, replaced by a defeated man stripped of his armor.

“You set up the automated audit yourself, didn't you?” Eleanor asked softly, her voice devoid of its earlier venom, replaced by a hollow, searching curiosity.

Julian slowly lifted his head, his grey suit jacket rumpled and stained with soot. “From the day Marcus tracked me down three weeks ago, I knew the end was coming,” Julian confessed, his voice heavy with exhaustion. “I couldn't beat him through the courts because he held the original signatures from twenty years ago. The only way to stop him was to trigger a total systemic crash—one that would expose his illegal shell companies right alongside mine.”

Eleanor stared at him, feeling a strange mixture of disgust and profound pity. “And what about us? What about the lies, the stolen inheritance, the life built on broken glass?”

“Everything I stole will be returned to the rightful estate,” Julian said, meeting her gaze without flinching. “Including this penthouse, the accounts, and every cent Marcus tried to extort from your family trust. I’ll turn myself in as soon as we drop Clara and Lily off at a safe federal facility.”

Suddenly, Thomas slammed on the brakes as a sleek black federal SUV pulled directly across their path, blocking the lane with lights flashing.
