Chapter 1 - The Broken Mirror of Domestic Trust

Julian stood frozen on the pristine white marble floor of the penthouse living room, his chest heaving as his eyes darted from the glittering shards scattered near his feet up to his wife, Eleanor. Eleanor held the heavy crystal pitcher aloft, her knuckles white against the handle, her expression cold and entirely detached.
At her feet, Clara, the eighteen-year-old maid dressed in a crisp blue uniform, whimpered softly, pressing her palms against the cold stone to avoid the dangerous glass splinters. Beside Clara stood little Lily, the seven-year-old maid-in-training wearing a matching miniature apron, clutching a torn red ribbon to her chest while staring at Eleanor with hollow, terrified eyes that held no business belonging to a child.
“Put it down, Eleanor!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with a raw, ugly panic that echoed through the vaulted, chandelier-lit room. “What on earth is wrong with you? She is just a child!”
Eleanor slowly lowered the pitcher an inch, tilting her head with an unsettling grace that sent the amber liquid inside sloshing dangerously close to the rim.
“Just a child, Julian?” Eleanor whispered, her voice slicing through the heavy air with surgical precision. “Is that what you call the living, breathing proof of your betrayal walking the halls of our home every single day?”
Julian stepped forward instinctively, his grey suit jacket swinging open to reveal the tension in his shoulders. “This has nothing to do with that! You are projecting your own paranoia onto innocent people. Let Clara up right now.”
“Innocent?” Eleanor laughed, a sharp, humorless sound that lacked any warmth. “Ask Clara whose handwriting is in the ledger locked inside your private study. Or better yet, ask her who gave her that red ribbon.”
Julian froze, the color draining completely from his face as his gaze snapped downward to the trembling little girl. Lily stared back at him, her eyes wide, whispering words that froze Julian’s blood cold.

“Daddy, she’s going to drop it,” Lily said.
