Chapter 11 - The Descent into the Sub-Level

The metallic screech of the pry bar biting into the steel fire door sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through the small group. Julian shoved the heavy iron push-bar of the stairwell exit with all his weight, throwing the door open to reveal a steep, dimly lit concrete stairwell plunging downward into the bowels of the high-rise.
“Move! Now!” Julian urged, grabbing Eleanor’s hand instinctively. For a fraction of a second, she pulled back, her fingers resisting his grip, but the sound of the metal door groaning under Marcus's assault convinced her. She swallowed her bitterness and plunged into the stairwell behind him.
Clara followed closely, carrying the sleeping child, her blue uniform brushing against the damp concrete walls. The air grew colder and damper the deeper they descended, smelling faintly of exhaust fumes, stagnant water, and old concrete—a stark, brutal contrast to the pristine white marble and crystal luxury of the penthouse above.
Footsteps echoed loudly from the landing they had just abandoned, followed by Marcus’s muffled curse as he successfully breached the fire door. The heavy thud of his boots hitting the stairwell concrete warned them that he was right behind, moving with terrifying speed and determination.
“He’s gaining on us,” Eleanor panted, her high heels clicking dangerously against the metal nosing of the concrete steps. She stumbled, nearly twisting her ankle, but Julian caught her by the waist, lifting her over the last few stairs as they burst out into the vast, cavernous underground parking garage.
The subterranean level was shadowy and cavernous, filled with rows of high-end luxury vehicles draped in protective covers under the amber glow of failing overhead security lights. The air was thick with a haze of smoke that had drifted down through the elevator shafts from the penthouse fire.
Julian scanned the dim rows frantically, searching for his personal armored sedan. His fingers patted his pockets instinctively, only to realize his key fob was still sitting on the mahogany side table beside the shattered crystal pitcher.
“Car keys?” Eleanor asked, her voice tight with rising panic as she caught the hesitation in his posture.

Julian didn't answer. Instead, he pointed toward a dark, idling utility van parked near the service exit, its headlights switched off but its exhaust pipe chugging softly in the damp air. Behind the wheel sat an unexpected face, watching them through the cracked windshield with a cool, knowing expression.
