Chapter 9: Awakening

The ICU was quiet when Elena pushed through the swinging doors. The heavy hum of the dialysis machine had been reduced to a gentle purr.

Arthur Sterling sat slightly propped up against his pillows. His face was pale and hollowed by weeks of toxicity, but his eyes—those sharp, observant hazel eyes—were unmistakably clear.

"Elena..." Arthur's voice was a rough whisper, parched like desert sand.

Elena rushed to his bedside, sinking to her knees and burying her face into his frail hands. The tears she had held back through every board meeting and federal interview finally poured out freely.

"I’m here, Dad," she wept. "I’m right here."

Arthur’s calloused thumb gently brushed away the tears on her cheek. "I heard you... in the foyer. When they knocked me down. I thought I was dreaming."

"They will never touch you again," Elena promised fiercely. "Victoria and Julian are in federal custody. The board voted unanimously this morning to reinstate your executive authority."

Arthur looked at the ceiling, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. "Forty years I spent building an empire, Elena. I thought wealth was a fortress. I thought if I made enough money, I could protect everyone I loved."

He turned his head slowly, looking at his daughter with profound humility.

"I was a fool. Money didn't protect us; it invited the wolves right to our dining table."

"You built an honest life, Dad," Elena said softly. "They were the ones who corrupted it."

"No," Arthur squeezed her hand with surprising strength. "We are going to change everything, Elena. We aren't just taking the company back. We’re going to give it back to the people who actually built it."
