Chapter 14: Restoring the Hearth

Spring arrived in upstate New York, breathing vibrant green life back into the gardens of the Sterling estate.

The grand French doors were wide open, allowing the crisp morning breeze and the warm golden sunlight to fill the foyer. The cold, sterile opulence of Victoria’s reign had been stripped away. In its place were family portraits, fresh wildflowers in ceramic vases, and the warmth of a lived-in home.

Arthur stood on the terrace, watching the morning mist rise off the lake. He wore a simple wool sweater and comfortable slacks, leaning gently on his cane.

Elena walked out to join him, carrying two mugs of freshly brewed black coffee. She handed one to her father and leaned against the stone railing.

"The quarterly reports came in," Elena smiled, taking a sip. "Employee productivity is up thirty-four percent. The new clinic in Chicago just broke ground."

Arthur chuckled softly, the sound rich and full of life. "I told you, Elena. When people know they are valued, they move mountains."

He looked at his daughter, his expression softening with deep paternal love. "You could have stayed in London. You could have built your own life far away from this mess. Why did you come back?"

Elena looked out across the shimmering lake.

"Because you taught me that when the foundation is shaken, you don't run away," she said softly. "You come home, and you stand by the people who gave you your roots."
