Chapter 3: The Cold Diagnosis
The sterile lights of St. Jude Memorial Hospital hummed quietly. Behind the reinforced glass of the private ICU room, Arthur Sterling lay hooked to an array of monitors, his breathing shallow beneath an oxygen mask.
Dr. Jonathan Patel, a lifelong friend of the family, stepped out of the ward, clutching a digital clipboard. His face was etched with grim exhaustion.
"Elena," Jonathan sighed, pulling down his surgical mask. "It wasn't a stroke."
Elena leaned against the corridor wall, her knuckles whitening around her coffee cup. "What did they give him?"
"A synthetic organophosphate compound," Jonathan said in a lowered tone. "Small, daily micro-doses mixed with his blood pressure medicine. Over six months, it mimics the onset of vascular dementia and sudden cardiac failure. If you had arrived even twenty-four hours later..."
He didn’t need to finish the sentence. The cruelty of it made Elena’s chest ache with raw fury. Victoria hadn’t just wanted Arthur’s wealth; she wanted him broken, humiliated, and stripped of his mind before the board voted him out.
"Can he recover?" Elena asked, her voice cracking slightly.
"His heart is strong, but the neurological shock is severe," Jonathan replied honestly. "He needs intensive dialysis and complete rest. But Elena... Julian filed for an emergency shareholder meeting. The vote to liquidate Sterling Global's research division is set for Friday morning."
Elena looked through the glass window. Arthur's eyes fluttered, searching the empty ceiling. He was the man who had stayed up all night teaching her advanced calculus, the father who built factories in Rust Belt towns because he refused to lay off working-class families.
"They think his legacy is money," Elena whispered, straightening her spine. "They don't understand that his real power was knowing who to trust."
