Chapter 9: The Media Blackout Broken

By Monday morning, Julian Vance launched a desperate counter-offensive in the local press.

A paid public relations firm published an article in a regional digital journal, claiming that Elena Nolan was a ""disgruntled relative attempting to extort a prominent philanthropic family on their wedding day using edited video clips.""

The article demanded that Elena be removed from her judicial digital forensics role.

Elena did not issue an angry press release.

Instead, at 11:00 AM, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia held an official, televised press briefing at the federal courthouse in Savannah.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Jenkins stood at the podium, flanked by senior FBI investigators.

""This morning, a thirty-count federal grand jury indictment was unsealed against Julian Vance and three corporate officers,"" Jenkins announced to the packed media gallery. ""The charges include wire fraud, corporate embezzlement exceeding $38 million, gross vehicular manslaughter in connection with the 2023 maritime death of David Vance, and felony witness intimidation.""

Jenkins displayed the full, unedited 4K ballroom surveillance video on the massive courtroom monitors.

The footage showed Julian’s unprovoked, aggressive assault on six-year-old Mia, his terrifying verbal threats, and Elena’s heroic defense of her daughter.

""The integrity of this evidence was preserved through the flawless digital chain of custody maintained by the Chatham County Forensics Division,"" Jenkins stated. ""An innocent child was targeted because she held the key to an empire’s hidden crimes. The Department of Justice will seek maximum statutory penalties without possibility of bail.""

Within fifteen minutes, the public relations firm deleted its website.
